Endodontic treatment, commonly known as root canal treatment, is a complex dental procedure commonly out of the scope of general dentists due to the lack of dedicated equipment, experience and knowledge in tooth morphology. This procedure is required when the nerve of the tooth become infected (abscessed) due to dental decay, trauma, a cracked tooth or when the previous root canal treatment fails.

Root canal treatment is a delicate procedure and care must be taken to ensure tooth is adequately anaesthetised. Canals can sometimes be very fine or occasionally calcified or blocked completely. There is often great difficulty locating and negotiating these canals , therefore extensive training and an operating microscope is required to deliver successful treatment.
